Be a part of this great cause and help RAFT give to the kids of Africa. We are requesting donations to help with the purchasing of school supplies such as pencils, crayons, paper, etc. the money will also go to aid in the expensive costs of shipping. Any amount would go a long way in giving these kids hope for a better education and future.
We are also looking for any kids books that you may be able to donate. We are hoping to build a library of 300 books or more as well. To help keep shipping cost down, we are asking that all books be paperback and kid orientated.
Lines of Hope all started when a friend of one of the members and volunteers of RAFT, started working in Africa teaching. Through his emails, we learned about the need for school supplies and books in the village that he was working in. Below is couple of heartfelt paragraphs from one of those emails. please read. As well there is a photo gallery.
"finally I arrived back in Kaele with gifts for the children next door
which I passed out the next day, Book bags created by my cousin filled with things that I had purchased or my family had
collected. In about 15 minutes there was another knock on the door.
Opening it there were three children from across the road wanting a
pencil or a pen. No problem - a pencil and pen for each. Then 15
minutes later another knock. Word was out! When I opened the door there
was a sea of about 50-60 children in the front yard all wanting pencils.
Thanks to Newville church they all went back to school with new
pencils. After they left the grandmother from next door was left on the
step. Quietly she said, "Please sir, do you have anything for an old
woman?" My mind raced and the only thing that I could think of was a
cake of Irish Spring soap and a calendar of Newfoundland pictures. She
was thrilled and in the humor that could easily come from NL she said,
"Thank you! Thank you! (Then with a smile she said) the calendar is a
present for me. I will wash with this perfumed soap - that will be a
present for my husband!" And laughing out loud she wandered off home.
And you never know the effect you have.
Later in the evening a young
mother and father came to visit with a very young child. They asked if
I had some book for the child. Newville had sent one small sponge book
for very young children. I passed it to them and it was like gold. The
father said "This will always be the first English book my daughter
ever had and surprised me by reading the title, The Best Tree, in
English. Never underestimate the power of kindness!
The rest of the
materials will be used as teacher reward packages as student teachers
head out to practice teach in a couple of weeks. Each primary school in
town will receive a supply of art and craft supplies. For many children
visiting my house it has been the first time they have ever seen
crayons! Also thanks to Newville Church, Kaele Teachers College now has
a library of 135 books that can be borrowed to teach in the classroom!
My goal is to have over 300 books by the end of the year. I know that
another friend, Rev. Art Elliott, is beginning work with a group to
send supplies and books. I want to thank him for that. He asked what
type of things we need here. Basically they would be school supplies
like pens, pencils, crayons, chalk and any second hand or new primary
level books that are lying around. If anyone else has a few books lying
around that your children don't use anymore we would love to have them".
